DISCOVERY BAY YOUTH ORCHESTRA
Mission
Orchestral playing is essential in the process of learning music, as the shared search for the best expression and the fusing together of the various colours of the orchestra - each maintaining its own characteristics - is an excellent exercise not only musically, but also in overall human terms. The newly-established Discovery Bay Youth Orchestra serves mainly for educational purpose. Its mission is to give young musicians the opportunity to gain invaluable experience of playing in a symphony orchestra and inspire their lives on both musical and personal levels. By sharing the joy of music with one another within an orchestra, they will be vouchsafed an enlightening and rewarding experience which favours not just the broadening of their musical knowledge and the development of their artistic abilities, but also their harmonious human and spiritual growth.
Who can join?
Free from any application or course fees, all young musicians – both inside and outside Discovery Bay and regardless of their nationalities – with basic skills in any major orchestral instruments and enthusiasm in music are welcome to join our orchestra.
Soloists
More advanced students from the orchestra (as well as pianists) are invited to perform as soloists. Each of them can choose ONE movement from a selected list of Mozart Concertos and perform as soloist with the Discovery Bay Youth Orchestra. In order to facilitate their studying of the concertos and enhance their preparation of playing with an orchestra, they are required to inscribe for at least five hours of master classes, which are to take place between July and August 2012.
